Forest's Striker Scores Twice as Nottingham Forest Round Off Europa League Campaign with Win over Ferencvaros

Forest striker in action
Igor Jesus has now scored 11 goals in every tournament for the club this season.

Match Summary

  • Forest were already through to the knockout round.
  • Bence Otvos deflection gives Nottingham Forest a first-half lead.
  • The striker's European strike puts the team in command.
  • Striker nets again with a sharp finish in the second half.
  • James McAtee rounds off a great display with a spot-kick.

Igor Jesus found the net on two occasions as the Premier League side rounded off the league phase of the European competition with a comfortable win against Ferencvaros at the City Ground.

The hosts had previously guaranteed a berth in the knockout round play-offs and went into this game with a small chance of reaching the top eight, even though they needed several results to go their way.

That did not happen but this assured performance will give the supporters confidence that their team can come through the two-legged play-off to reach the last 16.

Kristoffer Zachariassen struck the upright with a header inside the first 10 minutes for the away team – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from then on.

They opened the scoring in the early stages when a delivery from midfield was deflected in by Bence Otvos and added a second four minutes later – the striker squeezing a shot in at the back post for his 10th goal of the season.

The forward's 11th came early in the second half when he timed a run perfectly to escape the defence and then drive an effort past the shot-stopper.

The third strike ended the visitors' hopes of mounting a recovery and instead Forest added a fourth when the impressive McAtee converted a penalty after a foul by the hapless Otvos inside the box on the winger.

The Europa League knockout phase play-off lottery takes place on the final Friday of January (12:00 GMT), where Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It's more than the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these players to do collectively well, the entire team," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"That was another step, but it is a positive one."

Forest Analysis: Striker Shines as New Signing Watches On

Jesus has been a standout performer for Nottingham Forest in European competition this season with half of his 11 goals scored in the Europa League.

His brace also means he has scored a trio of strikes in his previous two outings and the prospect of competition for his position in the forward line could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was watching this match from the directors' box.

This development may well have been on the striker's mind as he was outstanding against Ferencvaros, delivering two excellent finishes and overall being a constant threat to the opposition backline with his speed and runs.

Jesus was not alone in impressing, with McAtee turning in his finest display in a Forest jersey since joining from Manchester City in the previous transfer window, while the Swiss international also performed well.

Such positive showings will give Forest some fresh hope as they switch focus to pulling further away from the Premier League relegation zone when they host their London rivals on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a reaction," continued the manager.

"I have always trusted their commitment or their dedication or honesty. It is just go and show your quality.

"McAtee was very good and Dan was super sharp. Igor got another two and these are good signs."
