French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, following months of insistence from the United Kingdom.

This policy shift follows the Prime Minister wrote to the President asking him to back the plan and saying there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.

French security forces will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.

French police have rarely intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both officers and civilians.

"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."

Currently, a French maritime police representative states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding human life.

Notably, the official ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.

This determination to intervene at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister departed from government.

That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.

Now French authorities will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.

Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the past.

UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
