Much like Storm Claudia hit the northern region the night before, City swept Manchester United aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing three-nil triumph for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their championship potential as they reinforced their place at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Defeats for United

This result represented successive WSL setbacks for Skinner's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, putting them a significant margin off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

The Red Devils' capacity to manage domestic and European soccer with a thin roster has been a frequently analyzed subject since they qualified for the Champions League. Reviewing the schedule, it always seemed this was the matchday that would fully examine this ability. Early Chances

The early indicators came quickly when Miedema used her power to push Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Her crosses were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg scrambled off the line.

The Red Devils had a number of sorties forward, their long-ball tactic giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. Manchester City, in the meantime, dominated possession, probing their opposition and trying to lure them of their structure.

Triple Strike

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the far post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was City’s seventh header of the season.

They extended their lead with another pair of goals just before the interval. When Rose was permitted to drive through the middle from the back, the play opened up for City. The key Kerstin Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before delivering a accurate low cross for Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a third after a quick turnover in the ball saw Lauren Hemp given the opportunity to fire a shot home from outside the box.

Second Half

The primary adjustment came from the United manager at the half-time as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the contest. Ex- City player Park came most likely to score, striking the upright, but the visitors were creatively abject and were unable to produce a one shot on target.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have added to their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to beat any side who ended above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a favorable position after nine games.
