The Details Known Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
