The Showrunner Shares He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that Pluribus would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—the creative team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Fan Response

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.

“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Does Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… in a way.

“There are some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“I want Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
