Users Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
