A teenager from Australia has faced legal proceedings after reportedly defacing a sizable art piece of a mythical creature by affixing googly eyes to it. The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated remotely at the local court in South Australia on Tuesday, charged with a single charge of damaging property. In a statement at the time of the recent event, the local council said that surveillance video showed a person placing artificial eyes on the artwork, which residents have nicknamed the “Cast in Blue”. The accused did not enter a plea and told the judge she was unwell, according to media sources, with the magistrate advising her to secure a legal representative before her next court date in December. The damaged sculpture following the googly eyes were taken off. The following day the alleged incident, the local mayor said that restoration to the popular community sculpture would be costly as the stickers could not be detached without damaging the art piece. “This wilful damage to a valued community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin said in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those people of our society who have welcomed Cast in Blue.” She added the council would pursue the “substantial” restoration expenses from those accountable for the damage. At the time the sculpture was initially suggested, it received varied responses from the area residents due to its price tag and design. Priced at 136,000 Australian dollars ($89,000; £68,000), the artwork represents a legendary giant animal, with the creators inspired by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater discovered in nearby caverns that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”. The sculpture is its formal title but locals nicknamed the piece the ‘Blue Blob’.
